The liver is a vital organ.
Despite the fact that it accounts for only about 2% of body weight, it is responsible for about 1/4 of basal metabolism. The high content of enzymes in hepatocytes enables them to control multiple biochemical processes, more than any other cells in the body.
 
The liver contains a significant amount of blood; approximately 1/3 of the total amount of blood in the body passes through the liver every minute. Approximately 1/4 of this blood contributes to oxygen supply to the liver and the supporting and connective tissue, with the remainder (which comes via the portal vein) contains nutrients which are made in the digestive tract and retained and converted in the liver cells before releasing the circulation. In this way, the liver form and regulate the reaction of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Also the combustion of the alcohol takes place in the liver.
 
Some carbohydrates (such as glucose, fructose, galactose) supports the energy production, but can also be stored as glycogen. If we do not get enough nutrition, the  liver cells break down glycogen into glucose that enters the bloodstream. To keep the blood sugar level constant, the cleavage process governed by hormones (including insulin and glucagon). Upon starvation live cells can produce glucose from amino acids and fatty acids. In the liver, digested fat into fatty acids by the bile are formed here. The liver can also cleave drugs, including destruction of toxic metabolic waste products and other toxins by enzyme systems which it contains for this purpose. Some toxins, alcohol and barbiturates decompose by oxygenation. Other substances are removed by being converted to more soluble compounds which may be excreted in urine or bile.
 
Ammonia, which is a waste product of protein metabolism, is contained in the liver cells forming urea and excreted through the kidneys. The continuous degradation of hemoglobin from old red blood cells released besides iron and globin (a protein) is also a toxic and insoluble dye known as bilirubin and secreted into bile. In addition, the liver takes care of protein production (75-100 g protein per. Day), with almost all of the blood protein produced here (eg. Albumin and fibrinogen). Approximately 95% of blood proteins are also saved in the liver, and the same applies to the fat-soluble A, D, E, K vitamins and the water soluble B-vitamins.
