Pumkin seed contains a glycoside (cucurbitin), phytosterols in free or bound form, tocopherols, carotenoids (lutein and beta carotene), squalene and minerals (including selenium, zinc, calcium, copper, iron, manganese, phosphorus and potassium). In addition, up to 50% fat oil (composed mainly of fatty acids palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid and linolenic acid) and proteins.
Pygeum Africanum contains various chemical substances that have a mild anti-inflammatory effect. Pygeum africanum also contains fatty acid derivatives that can prevent cholesterol from developing prostate size. Additionally, laboratory tests show that Pygeum africanum can reduce prostate cells or the ability of cancer cells to divide into new cells.

In animal studies, Pygeum africanum has increased the sperm activity and number, which could be a possible cause of male infertility. Some unconfirmed reports seem to indicate that it may also have a moderate effect on stimulating hair growth. Historically, it has also been used to treat urinary tract problems
